The documents required can depend on whether the RV is motorized or towable, its model year, legal trailer classification, title history, and whether a lien is recorded.
Vehicles older than their applicable title-age limit generally fall under the corresponding age-based exemption. A legally exempt RV still needs appropriate ownership evidence. A previous registration, bill of sale, or supporting document may be relevant. See Alabama's official title requirements.
Does a Bumper-Pull Travel Trailer Need a Title?
A bumper-pull hitch does not automatically establish that a recreational travel trailer is exempt from Alabama titling. The Alabama Department of Revenue lists certain bumper-pull and utility trailers among exemptions, but separately identifies travel trailers, folding campers, and fifth-wheel campers as titled recreational categories.
Legal classification and model year matter more than the appearance of the towing connection. If you are uncertain, check with ALDOR or your county licensing office. Do not assume a camping trailer has the same paperwork requirements as an ordinary utility trailer.
Title Assignment, Signatures, and Bill of Sale
For a vehicle requiring a title, complete the applicable ownership assignment accurately. Check that owner names, the VIN, and lien information agree with the title and supporting records.
Alabama generally does not require notarization of an ordinary title or manufacturer's statement-of-origin assignment. Special affidavits, estate documents, or other supporting paperwork may have separate rules.
A dated bill of sale helps record the transaction. Include the buyer's and seller's identities, RV description and VIN, sale date, price, and signatures as applicable. Alabama Rule 810-5-1-.246 sets minimum requirements for certain documents involving vehicles outside the certificate-of-title act; it is not a universal substitute for assigning a required title.
Keep copies of the completed documents. See ALDOR title-application guidance and Alabama's bill-of-sale rule.
What if Your Alabama RV Title Is Missing?
First determine whether the RV legally requires a title. If a required Alabama certificate has been lost, the titled owner or recorded lienholder may request a replacement through ALDOR's Public Title Portal. A designated agent can also process an application.
A title-exempt RV presents a different situation. If the title was issued in another state, that state's rules may apply. A missing title should be disclosed during the initial inquiry, but no purchase without adequate ownership documents is guaranteed.
See the Alabama replacement-title procedure.
Electronic Titles and Outstanding Loans
Alabama participates in the electronic lien and title system, known as ELT. When a qualifying designated agent records a lien electronically, the title may be an electronic record rather than a paper certificate held by the owner. ALDOR explains how a current ELT can be printed and why a later physical replacement requires a separate application.
If you still owe money, identify the lender and current lien status. A paid-off loan with an unreleased recorded lien is different from financing that remains outstanding. The parties need to agree on lender, payment, and ownership-document steps. Do not assume EasyRVBuyer automatically pays a lender or secures a release.
Read ALDOR's electronic lien and title guidance.
Federal Odometer Disclosure for Motorhomes
Federal odometer disclosure can apply to motorhome transfers. Under 49 CFR 580.17, exemptions include vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 16,000 pounds and non-self-propelled vehicles, such as ordinary travel trailers and fifth wheels.
Qualifying model year 2010 and earlier vehicles follow the applicable 10-year exemption period; qualifying model year 2011 and later vehicles follow a 20-year period. These federal rules differ from Alabama's title-age exemptions. If mileage disclosure applies, it must be accurate.
Consult 49 CFR 580.17 for the precise exemptions.
Jointly Owned and Inherited RVs
When an Alabama title lists two owners, check the conjunction between their names. Under Alabama Administrative Rule 810-5-75-.40, owners joined by “and” or listed without a conjunction generally must both sign the applicable assignment. Where ownership is joined by “or” or “and/or,” one owner's signature generally satisfies the corresponding rule. Ownership disputes and unusual documents may require additional review.
For inherited RVs, the paperwork can depend on whether the estate is being probated. ALDOR identifies letters testamentary or administration for applicable probate situations and describes Form MVT 5-6 with a death certificate for certain non-probate situations. Possession alone does not necessarily provide authority to sell.
See Alabama's joint-ownership rule and deceased-owner title guidance.
Salvage and Rebuilt RV Titles
Damage and title status are different. An RV with a leaking roof or engine trouble does not automatically have a salvage title. If a vehicle does have an Alabama salvage or rebuilt designation, special disclosure requirements apply.
Alabama requires written disclosure of the applicable title designation at or before transfer, using prescribed wording in type no smaller than 10 points. Alabama also says a salvage vehicle cannot be registered or operated on public roads until the applicable rebuilt-title process is completed. An engine that starts does not override that restriction.
Disclose actual title status and discuss eligibility and transport individually. Consult ALDOR salvage and rebuilt vehicle guidance and salvage disclosure instructions.
This page provides general ownership information, not individualized legal advice. For unusual title histories, liens, out-of-state documents, or estates, confirm the applicable requirements with ALDOR, your county licensing office, or a qualified professional.
